Countdown to Opening Day at Mammoth Mountain: The 2026 to 2027 Season So Far
Season update checked October 21, 2026. Opening plans and mountain conditions can change.
The countdown is officially on. Mammoth Mountain is targeting Friday, November 13 for opening day 2026, and those first touches of snow have us thinking about winter mornings in the mountains.
Start with the first post in this series: Fall in Mammoth Lakes Before the Lifts Spin.
What we know right now
The resort’s official opening-day calendar lists November 13 for the start of the 2026 to 2027 season. It is a target to look forward to, with weather and conditions still having the final say. An opening date also does not mean every lift or trail will be ready.
The first snowfall of the season was reported on September 28. POWDER’s September report described a light high-elevation dusting and shared the resort’s video from McCoy Station. A little snow is enough to start the dreaming, even before there is a skiable base.
Another dusting followed on October 13, documented in SnowBrains’ coverage of Mammoth’s mountain photos. Those early glimpses of winter are encouraging, but a white summit is not a forecast for opening-weekend coverage.
Behind the scenes, Ikon Pass’s official season update highlights new remote avalanche mitigation technology at Mammoth. It gives patrol teams additional tools for managing conditions during storms. Terrain openings will still depend on the mountain team’s assessment.
Last season offers a useful reminder to stay flexible. Mammoth opened on November 20, 2025 after weather-related delays, as POWDER reported at the time. Before heading up this year, check the resort’s Mountain Report for current operations.

The El Niño wildcard
El Niño is part of this winter’s conversation, but the outlook has moved beyond a pattern that might develop. In its October 8 update, NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center reported that El Niño was already strengthening, with strong to very strong conditions likely to continue through January to March 2027.
That is a large-scale climate outlook, not a Mammoth snowfall total. NOAA also cautions that expected El Niño impacts are not guaranteed. We are keeping the seasonal outlook in perspective and looking to current mountain reports as winter approaches, rather than promising a deeper base or a longer ski season.
What opening season means if you are buying
If the countdown has you looking at Mammoth real estate, this is a useful time to think through what having a home here would look like. Would you spend long weekends near the Village, plan extended stays, or want a quieter base in Old Mammoth?
We encourage you to look beyond the ski-access description. Consider the route you would take to the mountain, parking, gear storage, snow removal and who will care for the home when you are away. For a condo, ask what the association handles and which responsibilities remain with you.
The right timing depends on the property, your plans and the details of a purchase. Opening day can be an exciting goal, but it should not rush your review of a home. We can help you compare neighborhoods and work through the practical questions before you decide.
For now, mark the calendar, wax the skis and keep an eye on the mountain report. We are looking forward to the next chapter of winter in Mammoth.
