Welcome to our weekly Flashback Friday series — where we share rare historic photos of Malibu and revisit the stories, landmarks, and moments that shaped this one-of-a-kind coastal community. With insight from Andy Lyon, “In the Bu Since ’62,” we pair classic Malibu photographs with present-day images to celebrate how far our town has come while honoring its origins.
Week 1 — Malibu Colony Gate (Then & Now)

Malibu Colony Gate – historic view

Malibu Colony Gate today
The Malibu Colony gate has long been one of the most recognizable entry points in Malibu. Originally a simple wooden structure welcoming early residents and Hollywood creatives to the “Malibu Beach Motion Picture Colony,” it now serves as the gateway to one of the most exclusive guard-gated beachfront neighborhoods in Southern California.
“I’ve walked through this gate since I was a kid. The Colony has changed, but the heart of the community has always stayed the same.” – Andy Lyon
